I Want to Be a Medspa Technician! What’s Next?
Yay! There are a lot of different routes you can take to become qualified for medspa jobs, from getting your MD, or RN to completing medical esthetician or aesthetician courses. Let’s take a look at what requirements you can expect if you choose to become a medical esthetician.
High School Diploma or Equivalent
To enroll in and complete most medical esthetician programs, you must have your high school diploma, GED, or an equivalent. Some programs may require additional prerequisites, and some Medspa techs find it helpful to have taken college-level science classes. Check with your school to find out what prior knowledge will help you be the most successful!
Completion of Medical Esthetician Program
In Utah, you must complete 600 hours of a certified training program or at least 800 hours of an apprenticeship to become a medical esthetician and be qualified to work any medspa jobs.
When choosing a program, make sure you find a school whose practices, values, and goals align with yours. Do some research online; talk to friends, family, and alumni of the program; and ask if you can take a tour of the facilities or meet with a representative to learn more about the training. This will help you find a school where you can thrive as you learn your trade.
In a medical esthetician course, you’ll learn about in-depth skin treatments that require more medical knowledge and skill to administer. This includes things like chemical peels, pre and post-surgery skincare, different kinds of injections, permanent makeup, and various laser treatments, such as tattoo and hair removal or acne reduction.
State Licensure
The next step after finishing your course is getting your license! First, you’ll complete a written and practical exam of what you need to know for medspa jobs. Once you’ve passed, you can apply for your license and get started on your medspa career.
