How to Become a Cosmetologist in Utah

If you ended up here, you’ve probably thought of opening a nail or makeup salon. Or you love experimenting with hairstyles and skincare routines. If you find yourself nodding, cosmetology might be the right industry for you!

Whether you’ve been dreaming of having your own salon since you were little or you’re just exploring career paths, we have all the information you need to become a cosmetologist in Utah.

What Is a Cosmetologist?

Let’s start with the basics! A cosmetologist is a trained professional who specializes in beauty services such as hair styling, skincare, makeup application, and nail care. Certified professionals are licensed to open establishments like makeup salons, nail care parlors, or barbershops.

As a cosmetologist, you’ll be responsible for prioritizing hygiene and safety during beauty routines, but your main job will be using a variety of techniques and products to help your clients feel great in their new look.

Okay, I’m In! How Do I Get Started?

The Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) outlines the requirements for becoming a Utah cosmetologist. We’ve summarized them here in three simple steps:

1. Complete Necessary Hours

In Utah, you must complete 1600 instruction hours at a certified cosmetology school or 2500 hours in an approved apprenticeship program in order to become a cosmetologist. Look into various options close by to find the right program for you.

2. Prepare for and Take Exams

After graduating from a cosmetology program or finishing an apprenticeship, it’s time for exams. You’ll take both the practical and written tests from the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC), and you need to get at least 75% on each to qualify for your license.

The best preparation comes from completing program requirements, but you can also go through practice tests and learn more about the exams on the NIC website.

3. Submit Your Application!

You’re almost there! Once you’ve passed your exams—and we know you totally will—submit your license application to the DOPL site and pay the required fees. Wait for your application to be processed and then give a cheer! Be sure to print out your license and display it in your salon.
